Hush Terms of Use
Effective 8 October 2026
These terms cover your use of Hush, the journal app for iPhone and iPad, and this website. Hush asks you to agree to them before you first use it, and again whenever they change; you can read them in the app any time under Settings > About. Using Hush means you accept them. Apple’s Standard End User License Agreement also applies to the app. Where the two differ, these terms add to Apple’s agreement for the matters they cover.
1. What Hush is
Hush is a private journal that stores your writing on your device. It includes an optional companion: an artificial intelligence language model that runs on your device and responds to your writing when you turn it on. How the companion works, what it is told and its safety protocol are described on The AI in Hush.
2. Who can use it
You must be at least 13 years old to use Hush. If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, use Hush only with the permission of a parent or guardian. AI companions may not be suitable for some minors.
3. The companion is AI, and it can be wrong
- It’s software, not a person. No one reads your pages or writes the companion’s replies.
- It can be inaccurate. The companion can misunderstand you, misstate what you wrote, or produce statements that are false, incomplete or inappropriate. Don’t rely on it for facts, and check anything important against your own pages or another source.
- It isn’t advice. Nothing in Hush is medical, psychological, psychiatric, legal, financial or other professional advice. Hush is not therapy, counseling or healthcare, and it is not a medical device. The companion must not be used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Always seek the advice of a qualified professional with questions about your health, and never disregard or delay professional advice because of something in Hush.
- It isn’t a crisis service. Hush’s safety check is automated and can miss things. It doesn’t monitor you or contact anyone. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line now, such as 988 in the US.
- You decide. You are responsible for the decisions you make and the actions you take, including any that follow something the companion said.
4. Your instructions for the companion
Hush lets you write your own instructions for the companion. You are responsible for what you write there and for the results. Instructions can’t turn off Hush’s own rules or its safety protocol, and the companion may not follow them exactly.
5. Your content
Your pages, chats and everything else you make in Hush belong to you. They stay on your device, or in your own iCloud if you turn on Encrypted Sync. We can’t see, restore or recover them. You are responsible for keeping backups; Hush’s encrypted backups open only with your recovery key, and if you lose the key, we can’t help you open them.
6. Purchases and subscriptions
Hush starts with a free trial. After it, a one-time purchase unlocks Hush for good. Hush Plus is an optional auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly, that renews at the price shown at purchase unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel it in your Apple account settings. All payments, renewals and refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s terms; we can’t issue refunds ourselves. Ending Plus never deletes anything you made.
7. Acceptable use
Don’t use Hush to break the law, to harm others, or to try to extract, copy or misuse its software or the model beyond what their licenses allow. The model and llama.cpp are provided under their own open-source licenses, which you can read in the app under Settings > About > Acknowledgements.
8. No warranty
Hush and its companion are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement. We don’t promise that the companion’s output will be accurate, appropriate or available, or that Hush will be free of errors or interruptions.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, of content, or of anything arising from your reliance on the companion’s output. Our total liability for any claim relating to Hush is limited to the amount you paid for Hush in the twelve months before the claim. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be waived.
10. Changes
We may update these terms. The new version will be posted here with a new effective date. Because Hush has no accounts, we can’t notify you directly; continuing to use Hush after a change means you accept it.
